Windows and doors with proper headers
A wider window or a new patio door cuts into a wall that may carry load. We size the header, frame the opening and then install the unit.
Replacing a window in the same opening
When the opening stays the same size, a replacement unit goes into the existing frame or the old frame comes out to the studs. We check the sill and the framing around it for rot either way.
Making an opening wider
A wider opening needs a longer header and the right posts under each end. In a shear wall, the engineer may add hold-downs or sheathing to make up for the wall that was cut. We follow the plans for both.
Flashing and finish
New windows and doors are flashed into the weather barrier so water drains out, then trimmed inside and patched outside to match.
